Superintendent Message

Dear Parent/Guardian, April 2019

The State of Pennsylvania has adopted a Future Ready Index (FRI) to measure school success based on three indicators, one of which is chronic absenteeism.  Chronic absenteeism will be calculated based on the total number of students who have missed more than 10% of school days across the academic year.  A student is considered absent if they are not physically participating in instruction on school grounds or at an approved off grounds location for at least one-half of the school day.  Consistent with practice in past years, any type of absence which is granted, either excused and unexcused will count against the 10% total. Better attendance will put our students in a position to successfully achieve life success in a career and also increase academic attainment on PA tests and academic growth measures.

For future planning purposes:

It has been the Stroudsburg Area School District policy to approve educational trips up to five (5) days, with special approval beyond five days given by the superintendent.  Effective with the 2019-20 school year, any educational trips beyond five school days may be considered unexcused or unlawful and may not be approved.  We will be monitoring the 10% FRI expectation closely; therefore, educational trips will be reviewed and evaluated for consideration in respect to total absences. Many families go on trips throughout the course of the school year in excess of five (5) days.  We respectfully and proactively ask your consideration in helping us to better support your child/children being in school as we work toward college and career readiness. Educational trips during the school year may best serve your child if scheduled around the school board approved school calendar (see reverse side of this letter for calendar). Board policy #204 Student Attendance which is the lawful standard is still in effect and differs from FRI. Current policy states: A maximum of ten (10) days of cumulative lawful absences verified by parental notification shall be permitted during a school year.  All absences beyond ten (10) cumulative days shall require an excuse from a licensed practitioner of the healing arts.

As a district, we will be evaluated under the FRI and enforce the law via our policy. Your support and cooperation is most appreciated.  Questions regarding attendance and educational trips can be directed to me or your child's school principal.
